Welcome to the School District of Horicon
I Hope You've Noticed the Change!
If you stopped into Horicon High School or Van Brunt in recent weeks, I'm sure you've noticed the change. As we kicked off the school year we began to place increased emphasis on the values that we all appreciate the most. We've worked with our students to teach them how to be more kind and caring, to treat each other with respect, and to devote their time to the creation of a positive learning environment. Our efforts have paid off in a big way!
I want to especially thank our students and staff for the great start to the school year. What a pleasure it is to walk the hallways of our buildings and see such high levels of energy, all focused on one objective; to provide the best possible education for our students. Thank you for your continued efforts!

Safe Schools/Healthy Students Love and Logic Presentation for Parents and Staff
Love and Logic For Parents
February 23, 2012 6:30-8:00 p.m.
Horicon City Hall 404 E. Lake Street Activity Room A-B
"I don't understand it. The techniques my parents used so effectively just don't seem to work with kids today." Does this statement sound familiar to you? A lot of parents today are wondering what to do with their kids and are frustrated because the old techniques and consequences just don't seem work. And even if their kids are trouble-free right now, they fear what transitions to high school and the coming teenage years will bring.
Parenting with Love and Logic, a philosophy founded by Jim Fay and Foster W. Cline, M.D., teaches us that we should "lock in our empathy, love, and understanding" prior to telling kids what the consequences of their actions will be. Parent-child relationships are improved, family life is less strained, and we have time to enjoy our kids instead of either feeling used by them or becoming police rather than parents.

Staff Workshop for Grades 6-9
February 23, 2012 3:30-5:00 p.m. Horicon High School Library
For many students, the transition from middle school to high school is exciting yet challenging. Understanding and responding to the social and emotional needs of these students, and their impacts on teaching and learning, can make a significant difference in addressing behaviors that determine successful entry and adjustment to high school.

Dodge County Connections project director Lori Uttech said the 60-second commercial focuses on a video game theme and was shot in Beaver Dam High School.
The commercial is airing on MTV, VH-1, ABC Family, FSN, Nickelodeon, SciFi, Discovery Channel, Weather Channel on Charter and stations for NICK-TV, MTV-TV, and FAM-TV on Time Warner.
It will air for the next few weeks and again in the fall. Students from five of the school districts volunteered for the public service announcement.
"One of the major highlights is getting kids from different schools to work together," Uttech said.
The students are Tyler Meli, Gracie Worthen and Maddi Lockwood from Beaver Dam; Frances Brown, Hannah Brown and Noah Giebink from Waupun; Jose Galan from Dodgeland; Calee Strake and Jennifer Beechen from Mayville; Courtney Harmuth and Brennon Radschlag, Horicon, and Austin Falkenthal and Morgan Culver, Hustisford.
"The kids designed, edited and acted in it," Uttech said. "They really tried to follow research on positive youth development."
The students met seven times to plan the making of the video and filmed an entire day at BDHS.
The commercial is made possible by the Safe Schools/Healthy Students grant with the help of Charter Communications. The grant has been used by area schools for the last two and a half years.
The local SS/HS initiative is called Dodge County Connections and comprises the school districts and police departments in Beaver Dam, Juneau/Dodgeland, Horicon, Hustisford, Lomira, Mayville, Neosho and Waupun, along with the Dodge County Sheriff's Department, the Dodge County Department of Health and Human Services and Lutheran Social Services of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan.
