Educator's Tools
Tumblr

Tumblr makes it effortless to share anything you find or create. Post text, photos, quotes, links, dialogues, audio, video, slideshows, and more.  Don't pay for storage. Don't pay for bandwidth. Don't even pay for advanced features like full theme source code control, custom domain hosting, and group blogs.

Google Docs

Google Docs is right in your email account, you all have it.  You can upload files from your desktop or create documents, spreadsheets, forms, and presentations right in Google Docs.

Google Docs: Beginners Guide

Google Docs is an easy-to-use online word processor, spreadsheet and presentation editor that enables you and your students to create, store and share instantly and securely, and collaborate online in real time. You can create new documents from scratch or upload existing documents, spreadsheets and presentations. You can even create forms and drawings. There's no software to download, and all your work is stored safely online and can be accessed from any computer.

Livebinders

Livebinder allows you to organize resources within tabs easily and at no cost. You can also share the binder by embedding it into your blog or website, or simply sharing the url. Here’s great ‘tips and tricks’ for using

LiveBinders is your 3-ring binder for the Web

  • Collect your resources
  • Organize them neatly and easily
  • Present them with pride

Best of all, it's free!

Diigo

Diigo is two services in one -- it is a research and collaborative research tool on the one hand, and a knowledge-sharing community and social content site on the other.

Diigo provides a browser add-on that can really improve your research productivity. As you read on the web, instead of just bookmarking, you can highlight portions of web pages that are of particular interest to you. You can also attach sticky notes to specific parts of web pages. Unlike most other web "highlighters" that merely clip, Diigo highlights and sticky notes are persistent in the sense that whenever you return to the original web page, you will see your highlights and sticky notes superimposed on the original page, just what you would expect if you highlighted or wrote on a book!

Moreover, all the information -- highlighted paragraphs, sticky notes, and the original url -- are saved on Diigo servers, creating your personal digest of the web, your own collection of highlights from the web - ones that are meaningful to you! You can easily search, access, sort and share this collection from any PC or even iPhone.

Evernote

Evernote is great for many things; for organizing notes as I work through research or trouble-shooting issues. For more information go to my post ‘evernote…organizes your notes and more’. As a collaboration tool it is great for brainstorming ideas, creating agendas, or bringing together everyone’s ideas and information into one place.

Poll Everywhere

Instant Audience Feedback - An alternative to clickers in the classroom is using Poll Everywhere.

Doodle

Easy scheduling,Free of charge and without registration.   Set-up a meeting, or create and share a sign-up for meeting snacks

Doodle eliminates the chaos that comes from scheduling and saves you a lot of time and energy when you’re trying to find a time to bring a number of people together. Instead of using just one option, you can propose several dates and times and the participants can indicate their availability online. With one look, you’ll be able to see what the best time is for the meeting, and this works with any calendar system that is being used.

Bit.ly

Bit.ly is a url shortening service. Anytime you have a long, complicated url you can use Bit.ly to shorten it down to something much more manageable. And if you create a free Bit.ly account you can customize your shortened url to make it even more manageable. For example, it's far easier for me to direct people to bit.ly/byrnepd than it is to http://sites.google.com/site/richardbyrnepdsite/home. You can use Bit.ly by copying a url and pasting it into Bit.ly or you can try the Bit.ly browser bookmarklet. Try Bit.ly the next time you're setting up a lesson plan that requires having all of your students enter a long, complicated url.

View Pure

ViewPure allows you to display YouTube videos without displaying the "related videos" and advertisements that appear next to each video. There are two ways that you can use ViewPure. You can copy the url of your chosen YouTube video and paste it into ViewPure where it will then strip away everything but the video. The other option is to install the ViewPure bookmarklet and click anytime you're viewing a YouTube video.

Snip.ly

Snip.ly is a new service for clipping and sharing parts of websites. When you want to share just a portion of a webpage with someone you can now highlight the text you want and share it.  Along with highlighting text from webpages Snip.ly allows you to comment on the things your snip. This could be useful for students to share thoughts about articles they read or for you to share a webpage and include some reading questions for students.

Fill Any PDF Form

It engages students in the classroom and provides a virtual window into the classroom. To see a demo classroom, click on the demo button.

Snip Snip It

SnipSnip. It will crop the video down to only the parts you want to share with students.  SnipSnitIt is easy to use, just copy and paste a YouTube url, choose the start and end point and click “snip”.  Easy! After snipping your video you can embed the shortened video on a website or blog or share the shortened video with a link.  The other benefit: all of the YouTube extras (a.k.a. distractions) are eliminated in the SnipSnipIt version.
