School District of Horicon

Academic Standards

Introduction

The 2015-17 state budget requires that each school district clearly identifies the academic standards adopted by the Board of Education.  This Board action is required during the first meeting after July 1st.  Since this change became effective July 14, 2015, we were not able to take this action at our July Board of Education meeting and thus will take action at the August 17, 2015 meeting.

What are Academic Standards?

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction explains, “Wisconsin Academic Standards specify what students should know and be able to do in the classroom.  Wisconsin has academic standards for separate content areas.”

Wisconsin Academic Standards Include:

More information about these standards can be found at http://dpi.wi.gov/standards.

What is the Curriculum?

The curriculum includes information about how the academic standards will be taught.  It includes such things as the lesson plans, resources, classroom activities, and assessments that will be used by our teachers.  We determine the curriculum locally in the School District of Horicon.

Common Core Standards

In 2010 the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction adopted Common Core Standards for English Language Arts (ELA) and Math.  The Common Core ELA Standards are imbedded in all other academic standards as well and are known as Literacy Standards and thus education in literacy is an expectation across the curriculum.

Administration Recommendation to the Board of Education

It is our recommendation that the School District of Horicon adopt the Wisconsin Academic Standards including the Common Core Standards for the 2015-16 school year.

Board Adoption

The administration recommendation was adopted by the Horicon School District Board of Education at its August 17, 2015 meeting.
