Digital Storytelling
FlipSnack

FlipSnack is a flipping book software that lets you convert PDF documents into Flash page flip digital publications that you can embed into your website.

FlipBook
Storybird

Storybirds are short, art-inspired stories you make to share, read, and print. Read them like books, play them like games, and send them like greeting cards. They’re curiously fun.

Little Bird Tales

Capture your child's voice and imagination with our creative story building tool and share them with friends and family.  Little Bird Tales is a nice site for digital storytelling for elementary/young learners. Students get to create/upload their art work, record/narrate their voice, and add text to their story. Their finished story can then be viewed/emailed online.  Little Bird Tales walks users through each step of creating a multimedia story. Users can upload images, draw images, or record from their webcams. Stories can be written with text or narrated by students using microphones connected to their computers.

Kerpoof

The Kerpoof website is owned and operated by the Walt Disney Company. Kerpoof will allow you to be creative online and share your creations with others

Animoto

For a quick and easy way to create simple videos from pictures, sound, text, and existing video clips try Animoto.  Animoto makes it possible to quickly create a video using still images, music, and text. In the last year Animoto has added the option to include video clips in your videos too. Animoto's free service limits you to 30 second videos. You can create longer videos if you apply for an education account.

Storyboard That

Storyboard That is a nice storyboarding tool that provides you with three frame and six frame templates in which you can create your story. To help you create your story Storyboard That provides dozens of scenes, characters, and text bubbles to fill your storyboard's frames. Each element that you drag into your storyboard's frames can be resized, rotated, and repositioned.

Toontastic (for the iPads)

A wonderful free iPad that allows children to create animated cartoon stories.  They can choose from stock characters or draw their own while animating them and recording their voice for narration.  Also, w/ Toontastic's built in story arc it takes students step by step up on how to create a story.

Voicethread

A VoiceThread is a collaborative, multimedia slide show that holds images, documents, and videos and allows people to navigate slides and leave comments in 5 ways - using voice (with a mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video (via a webcam).   Share a VoiceThread with friends, students, and colleagues for them to record comments too.

Picture a Story

Interactive storytelling activity that lets you create stories with artwork from the Delaware Art Museum. Students first select a story genre, then a setting for the story to take place in. Next, they insert characters and props into their scene to create a unique scenario. From this assemblage students can either write or record an accompanying story. All of the available imagery comes directly from the Museum collection.

Blabberize

Have students record songs on poems demonstrating their knowledge of a topic and record the creation with Blabberize.  Excellent tutorial on how to use blabber http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eodrCTzi44Q.

Every Child has a Story

A fun world where kids create their own book.

Creaza

Creaza offers you an integrated, web-based toolbox for creative work, both at school and in your free time.  You use the toolbox along with various fully developed thematic universes:  historical periods, fairy-tales, fantasy worlds, and current challenges, such as climate/environment.

Zooburst

ZooBurst is a digital storytelling tool that lets anyone easily create his or her own 3D pop-up books with sounds and actual pop-up effects when you turn the page.  You first create a free account, and then use the simple interface and tools to begin creating your book.

Myna

Use Myna to remix music tracks and audio clips. Apply sound effects and record your own voice or instruments!   Using Myna you can mix together up to ten tracks to create your own audio files. The sounds you mix can come from the Myna library, your vocal recordings made with Myna's recorder, or audio tracks that you upload to your Myna account.

Jaycut

Engage your audience with the world's premier online video editor seamlessly integrated on your website, or edit your own videos on JayCut's community.

  • Every element of your video can be added through simple drag and drop motions. The play length of each element in your video can be shortened or lengthened by simply dragging the ruler tools.
  • Jaycut's API is free and allows you to put the Jaycut video editor on your own website. Using their API you can install JayCut's video editor on your PHP-based website. JayCut offers step-by-step directions for installing their video editor on your website.
  • JayCut has options for adding slow motion effects, direct recording from your webcam, a green screen, and color editing.
Simple Booklet

To create a book using Simple Booklet just sign-up for a free account and click create. Select the layout template that suits your needs. To add content click anywhere on the blank canvas and a menu of options will appear. You can add text, images, audio files, videos, and links to each page of your booklet.

My Ebook

My Ebook allows users to create ebooks that contain text, images, and videos on each page. My Ebook users can create ebooks from scratch or upload their existing PDF files to display in a book format.

One word of caution about My Ebook, you might not want to let your students browse the library of ebooks without supervision. I didn't see anything that was explicitly bad (the terms of service forbid that type of content) but there is some material that you might not want middle school students accessing.
